ICE Take Game 1 vs Selects
In the best of 5 quarter finals, it was the Winnipeg ICE that secured the first win of the series, beating the defending champs by a score of 5-1.
The start of the game saw Eastman bring the heat as they pressured hard and ultimately scored the first of the game. With screens in front, the Eastman defender, fired a wrist shot from the point, beating Shippam and giving the Selects the lead. The first period would end with the Selects ahead 1-0, leading the scoreboard in shots.
Starting the second on a power play, the ICE battled hard to even up the score at 1. With a scramble in front, Stewart and J.Bird both tried to jam it in before passing it across the crease to Yewdall who shot the puck into the empty net, scoring the first ICE playoff goal of 2019 and more importantly, giving the team momentum, resulting in a monsterous second period.
Shortly after Yewdall found the back of the net, the line reconnected once again, as Stewart found the back of the net, scoring her first of the Playoffs and putting the ICE up by 1.
With momentum building, Christensen passed the puck up to J.Bird, who was standing on the blue line. Creating speed and firing a shot from the top of the circle, J.Bird would beat the netminder glove side, notching her first goal of the playoffs.
The ICE weren't done yet, as Oxenforth would carry the puck in deep before dishing it to Tobin who would walk in and beat the goalie short side, scoring her first of the playoffs and putting the ICE up by a score of 4-1 to end the second.
The third period would see pressure from the Selects, however, they weren't able to beat Shippam. With the selects pulling their goalie with 3 min left in the game, Kraus would find the empty net, to score her first of the playoffs and secure the 5-1 win for the ICE.
The ICE are back in action on Friday as they compete in game 2 of the series in Ste.Anne. GO ICE GO!
